Peruvian-American mezzo-soprano Kelly Newberry was born and raised in Simi Valley, California. Kelly has gained a lot of performance experience as a student, both in recital and on the opera and musical theatre stage.

            Favorite roles she has performed include Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro) with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Opera Program and Amastre (Serse) with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Baroque Ensemble. In Ferbruary 2015, Kelly performed with the Albany Symphony as Second Lady in Mozart's Magic Dream, a show featuring the music from Die Zauberflöte.

            As a lover of art song, Kelly has spent three summers at SongFest, this summer Kelly received the Colburn Fellowship and performed in recital with Liza Stepanova. During Kelly's summers at SongFest she has worked with Martin Katz, Jake Heggie, Graham Johnson, Susanne Mentzer, Margo Garrett, and other artists in masterclasses and in private coachings.

            Kelly earned her bachelor’s degree in vocal arts at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and studied voice with Jane Randolph. Kelly will earn her master’s degree from the Bard College Conservatory Vocal Arts Program directed by Dawn Upshaw and Kayo Iwama in May 2016. She currently studies voice with Sanford Sylvan and Jane Randolph.

As a native Spanish speaker, Kelly hopes to discover and spread awareness of repertoire in the Spanish language throughout her career in opera. 6/29/15
