Carlos Drummond de Andrade Stories
For the grand finale of Lucerne’s Special Event Day, the ensemble of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY will be joined by several singers and a jazz trio. Why? Because the Academy students will perform with Maria Schneider, the First Lady of orchestral jazz. But don’t think of the traditional big band sound. Maria Schneider, who had significant experiences as assistant to Gil Evans before founding her own orchestra in 1992, widens the sonic spectrum of jazz through her expressive harmonic language and refined, chamber music-like arrangements. That will be demonstrated by the two multi-part works she will present in Lucerne. Inspired by poems of Ted Kooser and Carlos Drummond de Andrade, the CD Winter Morning Walks won three Grammy Awards in 2014 – including for the category Best Contemporary Classical Composition.
