Semmelweis with American Opera Projects

The American Opera Project and New York Academy of Medicine will present scenes from “Semmelweis.” The showcase takes place on Dec. 5, 2023 at the New York Academy of Medicine in New York City.

The work, which focuses on the life of Ignaz Semmelweis, whose research saved millions of mothers’ lives, is composed by Raymond Lustig and written by librettist Matthew Doherty. The work was developed as part of the AOP’s Composers & the Voice training program and premiered in Budapest on Sept. 28, 2018.

“Semmelweis” will feature music music director Mila Henry, stage director Matt Gray, and Matthew Bryan Feld as Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, as well as sopranos Charlotte Mundy, Marcy Richardson, and Joy Tamayo; mezzos Kelly Guerra, Samantha Martin, and Sophie Delphis; and altos Megan Schubert and Guadalupe Peraza. There will be an instrumental ensemble of three musicians: pianist Nissa Kahle, accordion and keyboards Peter Flint, and violist Leah Asher.

Before the presentation, Lustig and Doherty will discuss the development of their work and the lasting impact of Dr. Semmelweis.
